CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP –A long-anticipated addition to the region’s retail landscape is taking shape along the Route 228 corridor. Wegmans Food Markets Inc. has begun site preparation for a new store in the Cranberry Springs development, marking the company’s first entry into the Pittsburgh market.
The store will occupy approximately 115,000 square feet and sit on 13 acres of land adjacent to the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. In addition to offering a full selection of groceries, Wegmans is expected to bring the chain’s hallmark features to the community, including restaurant-style prepared foods, expansive produce and seafood departments, and a focus on customer service.
Cranberry Township officials have described the project as a major boost for the local economy, further enhancing the township’s position as a regional hub for business and development.
Site work is now underway, and artist renderings provided by Wegmans show a modern design that will blend with the Cranberry Springs development. The project represents a significant investment in the township and is expected to generate both jobs and excitement among residents who have long hoped to see the chain come to western Pennsylvania.
Bill Dimond, president of the Southern Butler County Business Association, said the project is more than just a new grocery store—it’s an investment in the region’s future.
“Wegmans will be a game-changer for Southern Butler County,” Dimond said. “Beyond offering quality food and services, the store will enhance the quality of life for local families and provide a significant economic boost by drawing more visitors and supporting surrounding businesses. It’s the kind of development that strengthens our entire community.”
“We’ve received thousands of requests for a Wegmans in the Pittsburgh region since opening our first Pennsylvania store over 30 years ago,” said Dan Aken, vice president of real estate and store planning. “We’re excited to have finally found the right location to bring Wegmans to the Pittsburgh area.”
The company will hire 400 to 500 employees for the new store, with the majority hired locally. Wegmans’ status as a great place to work is widely recognized. It has ranked highly on FORTUNE magazine’s list of “The 100 Best Companies to Work For” for 27 consecutive years. Employees cite an extensive array of benefits as the reason they chose Wegmans, including competitive pay and benefits packages, premium pay on Sundays and holidays, tuition assistance through the company’s employee scholarship program, and flexible scheduling.
