Mind Matters at MHS: New club promotes mental health awareness

Comedian Gab Bonesso spoke about mental health with Mars students earlier this month.

The Mind Matters club is a newly formed club that focuses on mental health.

“The main purpose is to raise awareness about mental health and reduce the stigma surrounding it,” said senior and club president and founder Olivia Miller.

Miller created Mind Matters to “spread positivity to students and remind them that they are not alone in their struggles.”

The club mainly focuses on the topic of mental health. Along with meetings during weekly activity periods, the club is also going to begin offering Wellness Wednesdays.

“Wellness Wednesdays at Mars are kind of like a brain break. There are themes that we decided on for each month, and we plan activities for the student body to do during homeroom on a set Wednesday,” said Miller.

During November, Mind Matters plans on creating leaves and having students list what thankful for as the Wellness Wednesday activity. Recently, the club brought in guest speaker and Pittsburgh native and comedian Gab Bonesso to discuss mental health.

“I thought the assembly was splendid and I loved her wild energy,” said sophomore McKenna McMurtrie.  Going forward, Miller hopes to continue Wellness Wednesdays, donate money to mental health organizations, and take members of the club on a field trip.

“I have so much faith for what we will do this year,” said Miller.
