No Tax Increase: Mars Area School Board Approves 2026–27 Budget

At the Monday, May 4, school board working meeting, directors approved the proposed 2026–27 budget with an 8–0 vote (one member absent).

Here’s what stands out:

  • No real estate tax increase — millage stays at 110.00
  • First time in 3 years without a tax hike
  • $943,588 will be used from the district’s fund balance (savings) to close the gap

Total budget:

  • Expenditures: $69.8 million
  • Revenue: $68.8 million

The reason the district was able to hold the line on taxes: increased state funding and continued local growth, including earned income and real estate taxes.

At the same time, costs continue to rise — including double-digit increases in health insurance and a $4.3 million overall budget increase.

The budget also includes new staffing, with 14 additional positions planned across the district.

The proposed budget will now be available on the district’s website for public review over the next 30 days before a final vote in June.

Business Manager Debbie Brandsetter said holding the line on taxes this year is a notable shift after recent increases.

For homeowners and families across Mars, Adams, and Middlesex Townships, this is one of those decisions you’ll feel—even if you don’t follow every meeting.
