About The 228 Times

News from your neighborhood.

The 228 Times is a weekly, digital-first, hyperlocal newspaper dedicated to covering the people, places, events and businesses that shape life along the Route 228 corridor — from Mars Borough to Adams Township and surrounding communities. Our mission is simple: deliver accurate, relevant, and engaging local news that strengthens community connections and keeps you informed.

Why We Exist

Our community is growing rapidly, but as development surges, so does the need for a trusted source of local news. The 228 Times was founded to fill that gap — providing coverage you won’t find from larger, corporate-owned media outlets. We’re independent, locally operated, and invested in the stories that matter most to our neighbors.

What You Can Expect

Every week, The 228 Times brings you:

• Local Government & Civic News – Updates on township and borough meetings, elections, ordinances, and community planning.
• Business & Development – From new storefronts to major infrastructure projects, we track what’s changing in our region.
• Schools & Sports – Spotlighting student achievements, school district updates, and local athletics.
• Community Life – Events, profiles, human-interest stories, and moments that make our neighborhoods unique.

Our Values

• Accuracy & Integrity – We fact-check, verify, and hold ourselves to the highest journalistic standards.
• Independence – Free from corporate influence, we answer only to our readers and our community.
• Community First – We listen to our neighbors, highlight local voices, and keep our focus on issues that matter here at home.

Our Founder

The 228 Times was founded by Harold Aughton, EdD — a journalist, marketing communications professional, and entrepreneur with over 25 years of experience in local and national media. Harold’s work has appeared in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, and Columbus Dispatch, among others. In addition to his journalism career, he has led marketing and branding initiatives for nonprofit organizations and founded a successful e-commerce business that he later sold. He launched The 228 Times to bring independent, hyperlocal reporting to the Route 228 corridor and surrounding communities.
