More Than Books: Inside the Mars Area Public Library’s Expanding Role in the Community

Adapted from a recent episode of the Middlesex Life podcast
For many residents, the phrase public library still conjures a familiar image: quiet rooms, rows of books, and the occasional stern “shhh.”

But according to Janae Callihan, director of the Mars Area Public Library, that image no longer tells the full story.

“Libraries today aren’t about silence,” Callihan said. “We actually want noise. We want people to feel comfortable in the space.”

What’s happening inside the Mars Area Public Library reflects a broader shift — one where libraries have become some of the last truly free, welcoming, and inclusive spaces in a community.

A Free Space in Every Sense of the Word

At its core, the Mars Area Public Library remains exactly that: free. Free to enter. Free to linger. Free to learn.

“That’s actually very hard to find anymore,” Callihan said. “A heated space in the winter, cooled in the summer — open to everyone.”

Beyond comfort, it’s the sense of belonging that keeps people coming back. Parents gather for story times. Seniors come in for technology help. Students fill tables in the evenings, working together on homework.

Not Just Books — Not Even Close

Books remain central to the mission, but they’re only part of what’s available. Patrons can check out telescopes, robotics kits, learning tools, Wonder Books with built-in audio and vocabulary support, Nintendo Switch games, audiobooks, Playaway devices, and e-books through Libby and statewide systems.

Librarians also help patrons navigate online forms, set up apps, and find digital resources.

Building Community Through Programming

Programming is where the library truly shines. From early childhood story times to craft workshops, technology help, and community partnerships, there’s something happening nearly every day.

Programs like PAWS to Read with Wally allow children to read aloud to a therapy dog in a judgment-free environment. Other offerings have included cat yoga, sourdough workshops, and hands-on learning experiences.

Serving the 228 Corridor

The library serves residents of Mars, Adams Township, Valencia, and Middlesex, with more than 8,000 active cardholders. Every kindergarten student in the Mars Area School District receives their first library card through school partnerships.

As conversations about the community’s future continue, library leadership is paying close attention.

Library Director’s Perspective on the Proposed Mars–Adams Township Merger

While the library board has not yet formally discussed the proposed Mars–Adams Township merger, Library Director Janae Callihan said she views the conversation as a positive step for the community.

“A municipal merger has the potential to improve coordination while supporting stronger long-term planning and sustainability for the library,” explained Callihan. “Our goal would be for patrons to experience little disruption and, over time, see positive improvements.”

Callihan emphasized that the library’s focus remains on serving patrons and responding to evolving community needs, noting that library leadership is actively following and participating in the public process.

Looking Ahead

Demand for small meeting rooms and community space continues to grow. Staff regularly evaluate circulation data to balance collections with community needs.

“The library isn’t about what we want,” said Callihan. “It’s about what the community wants.”

The Mars Area Public Library is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
