We know how the story ends.

A 5–4 overtime win. Gloves in the air. Players pouring off the bench. A championship secured in one unforgettable moment.

But for Mars Middle School hockey, the story didn’t begin with a goal in overtime—it began with a question.

Who are we?

“We were actually a pretty young team,” said head coach Josh Rosswog, a Mars graduate who returned for his second season behind the bench. “We only had five returning players, and we replaced all six of our defensemen.”

What followed was a season defined not by experience—but by growth.

Head coach Joss Rosswog, alongside assistant coaches Dave Myers, Matt DeMatteis, and Dan Martin, guided the team through a season defined by resilience, growth, and belief.

A Team That Grew Up Fast

From the start, Rosswog saw something different.

“The biggest thing was their attitude,” he said. “They were all excited to come to practice, every game, always giving full effort.”

That mindset translated into results.

Mars became one of the most explosive teams in its division, averaging more than seven goals per game as the season progressed. But more importantly, the players learned how to play together.

“They just kept getting better working with each other,” explained Rosswog.

By the end of the regular season, Mars posted a strong 10-3-1 record—but it wasn’t the wins that defined them.

It was how they handled the losses.

The Turning Point

After dropping their final two regular-season games—both against top teams—something shifted.

“It was after those losses in practice when everyone kind of committed,” Rosswog said. “They said, ‘We’re not going to lose again.’”

The team got healthy. The focus sharpened.

And when the playoffs began, Mars played its best hockey of the year.

“They just kept getting better each game,” he said.

Built on Effort and Belief

Rosswog doesn’t point to one star or one moment that defined the team.

Instead, he points to something harder to measure.

Relentless effort.

“They go full speed and never let up,” he said. “Even when we got down, they never got discouraged.”

That resilience showed up early in the playoff run. In the quarterfinal, Mars surrendered a goal just nine seconds into the game.

What followed said everything about who they had become.

“Everyone just picked each other up right away,” Rosswog said. “They turned it on from there.”

Championship Night Drama

The title game delivered everything you’d expect—and more.

Mars battled back and forth before finding itself trailing late in the third period. But just as they had all season, they responded.

They tied the game and forced overtime.

There was even a moment—seconds before regulation ended—when Mars nearly won it outright on a breakaway.

Time ran out.

Overtime awaited.

Prepared for the Moment

What looked like a high-pressure, unpredictable situation… wasn’t.

Rosswog and the assistant coaches had prepared the team for this exact scenario.

After the regular season, Mars spent time practicing 3-on-3 overtime hockey, focusing on spacing, puck control, and line changes.

So when the moment came, there was no panic.

“Just play our game,” Rosswog told his players. “We practiced this.”

The Goal—and the Celebration

The championship ended the way great hockey games often do—fast, chaotic, and sudden.

A shot from a tough angle.

A bounce.

And then… it was over.

An eighth grader buried the game-winner, sending Mars into celebration.

“It was just a fun scene,” Rosswog said. “A great feeling for the kids and the coaches.”

Unsung Heroes and Total Team Effort

While the overtime goal will be remembered, Rosswog was quick to credit the entire roster.

“Honestly, all of them,” he said when asked about standout performances.

Goalie Nick Lancy delivered key saves throughout the playoffs, including critical stops in the championship game. The team also killed multiple penalties—and even scored shorthanded.

Every piece mattered.

More Than a Game

For Rosswog, the moment carried extra meaning.

His son was on the team.

After the game, the celebration didn’t end at the rink.

“We stopped at GetGo on the way home and got a milkshake,” he said. “Just talking about the season on the ride home—that was probably the most fun.”

A Lesson That Lasts

Long after the trophy is put away, Rosswog hopes the players carry something bigger with them.

“That hard work, playing together, and never getting down—it pays off,” he said.

It’s a lesson learned over months of late-night practices, long road trips, and commitment—from players and parents alike.

“We can’t thank the parents enough,” Rosswog said. “There’s a lot of time and effort that goes into this.”

A Championship—and a Future

With a young core and a season defined by growth, the future of Mars hockey looks bright.

“I like to think they have a good future,” Rosswog said.

But for now, this group has already secured its place.

A young team.
A resilient team.
A championship team.

And a story that, fittingly, ended in overtime.
