Drivers traveling the Route 228 corridor next week should prepare for overnight lane restrictions as the final paving phase of PennDOT’s $55.8 million Three Degree Road intersection improvement project gets underway.
Beginning Wednesday, July 22, crews will perform final paving along Route 228 between Mars-Valencia Road and Davis Road. Work is scheduled nightly from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. through Friday, July 31, weather permitting. During construction, traffic will be reduced to a single lane with flaggers directing motorists through the work zone.
The paving marks one of the final major construction phases of the $55.8 million project, which includes additional through lanes, turn lanes, side road improvements, service roads, drainage and guide rail upgrades, new traffic signals, signage, pavement markings, sidewalks, ADA-accessible ramps and a roundabout.
The project has been a familiar sight for motorists over the past two years as crews reconstructed the intersection while maintaining traffic through multiple phases.
PennDOT advises motorists to expect delays during overnight hours and to use caution while traveling through the work zone.
Independence Excavating Inc. is serving as the contractor on the $55.8 million project, which remains on schedule for completion in November 2026.
Although the current Three Degree Road intersection project is expected to be completed in November, additional work remains before the entire Route 228 corridor is complete. Butler County is seeking approximately $61 million in federal funding for the Mars Railroad Bridge West (MRBW) Project, the remaining 3.25-mile segment of the Gateway 228 corridor. County officials estimate the final phase will cost approximately $122 million, with the requested federal grant covering about half of the project’s total cost. The project is the final section needed to complete the Route 228 corridor through southern Butler County.
