ADAMS TWP. — Motorists traveling along Route 228 will encounter overnight traffic restrictions beginning Friday as crews continue work on the Three Degree Road Intersection Improvement Project.
The work is part of PennDOT’s ongoing $55.8 million effort to improve safety and traffic flow at one of the busiest intersections along the Route 228 corridor.According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, nighttime paving and milling operations are scheduled from Friday, June 12 through Saturday, June 20, weather permitting. Work will take place nightly between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.
The paving operations will occur along Route 228 near Marland Drive, the intersection of Helenz Way and Brickyard Road, and the jughandle intersections at Marland Drive, Helenz Way and Officer Edwards Brooks Boulevard.
During construction, traffic will be restricted to a single lane with flaggers directing vehicles through the work zone. PennDOT is advising drivers to use caution and expect delays during overnight hours.
The work is part of the larger Three Degree Road Intersection Improvement Project, a major infrastructure investment designed to improve safety and traffic flow along the Route 228 corridor in Adams and Middlesex townships. The project includes the addition of through lanes and turn lanes, side-road improvements, new service roads to better manage access, drainage upgrades, guide rail improvements, replacement traffic signals, updated signage and pavement markings, sidewalks, ADA-compliant curb ramps and the construction of a roundabout.
The project has been underway for several years and has significantly altered traffic patterns along one of the region’s busiest transportation corridors.
PennDOT awarded the contract to Independence Excavating Inc., of Independence, Ohio. The project carries a price tag of approximately $55.8 million and is expected to be completed in November 2026.
